Everett Herald Endorses Sells

Thur, Oct 7, 2010

The 38th District has two House members who have made relatively quiet but concrete contributions, and are poised to do more.

We recommend re-electing incumbent Democrats John McCoy and Mike Sells to represent the district that includes most of Everett, much of Marysville and all of the Tulalip Reservation.

Sells’ legislative successes have come from his position as vice chair of the Higher Education Committee. He played key roles in creating a bachelor of science in nursing program at the University Center at Everett Community College, and the establishment of specialized aerospace courses to train workers for Boeing and its local suppliers. Sells named Legislator of the Year by Washington Student Association

Tue, Jun 15, 2010

State Representative Mike Sells has been named the 2010 State Legislator of the Year by the Washington Student Association. In doing, so, Jono Hanks, President of the WSA stated,"It is my distinct pleasure to let you know that the Washington Student Association has chosen to award you the Legislator of the Year award, for the House of Representatives. This year was a very difficult year with budget cuts across the board and the extended session, but throughout all of that turmoil, you made time to meet with students on a regular basis. You heard our concerns and acted on them."

"Our largest issue this year was whether or not the legislature would cede tuition-setting authority to the unelected Boards of Regents and Trustees at our universities, and while some legislators came into the session with their minds set on which side they supported, you made both sides present their arguments, and weighed the merits of their cases. The Washington Student Association very much appreciated your approach to that discussion."

"Due to how accessible you were as a legislator, how responsive to our concerns, and your approach to the most difficult discussions in Higher Education, we unanimously supported you for our Legislator of the Year in the House of Representatives."

"Thank you for all you do, and we look forward to working with you in the future."

EVERETT — The building isn't grand, but the Washington Aerospace Training and Research Center is teaching students the nuts and bolts of modern airplane manufacturing.

The “beta” class of 20 students opened their books and bench vises Wednesday morning after a celebratory grand opening with dozens of elected officials and aerospace dignitaries on June 3.

“We know this is not the Taj Mahal, but it's our beginning,” Linda Lanham, CEO of the Kent-based Aerospace Futures Alliance that helped spearhead the effort to open the center, said at the grand opening. Read complete article

Sells-Sponsored Bill Brings Needed Nursing Programs to Area

EVERETT -- The University of Washington’s Bothell campus will offer its bachelor of science degree in nursing in Everett this fall to help ease the state’s nursing shortage.

In a partnership with the university and Everett Community College, the program is expected to enroll 25 full-time equivalent students this year through the University Center of North Puget Sound at EvCC.

“We’re just delighted, of course,” said Kelly Snyder, director of external and government relations for the UW-Bothell.

She said the program, already available at Skagit Valley College, allows registered nurses to earn a bachelor’s degree while still working.

“It provides them the opportunity to move up in the ranks in the hospitals,” she said. “It’s the next level of education. Employers are looking for that.” Read complete article

Sells-Sponsored Tax Break Saves Marysville Jobs at Seacast

Tue, Mar 30, 2010

OLYMPIA -- A Marysville foundry secured a rare gift from the Legislature this year: a tax break.

Gov. Chris Gregoire has signed a new law exempting SeaCast Inc. from paying sales tax on wax and ceramic materials used in making castings at its facilities in Marysville and Seattle.

Lawmakers unanimously backed the bill in the regular session even as they considered taking exemptions away from other firms to raise money for plugging a $2.8 billion deficit in the state budget.

This new exemption takes effect July 1 and will save the company -- and cost the state treasury -- about $173,000 the first year.

On Friday, the governor signed the law, then posed for a photo with thankful company leaders who said it will help them preserve a 130-person workforce in Marysville and keep another 50 employees in the firm’s Seattle headquarters. Read complete article
